Preparations for Graduation: What You Need to Know Now to Succeed Then

Congratulations Class of 2016! Your degree is so close you can taste it, am I right? Graduating from undergrad can be exciting and nerve-wracking at the same time. Some seniors may be more than ready to leave Radford for bigger and better things, and some may be shaking in their boots at the thought of leaving a place they have known for years and venturing into the unknown.

This article is to help seniors make sure that graduation is as less stressful as possible. I am going to let you know all of the steps you need to take now to the time before you walk across that stage in May to your future.

First of all, if you have not filled out a graduation application you have to do that as soon as possible. The application is one page, but it takes awhile to fill out. Then, make an appointment with your advisor to make sure your class schedule for this semester and next semester is compatible with requirements.

Some miscellaneous requirements include a minimum credit number of 120 and a cumulative GPA of 2.0. However, some majors like Nursing have a higher GPA requirement. You should also check your Degree Works page and make sure you have taken all the classes needed for your major, B.S./B.A., or minor. If you are also getting a teaching certificate, check with the College of Education and Human Development Advising Center to confirm that you are meeting their requirements.

There are also some other academic requirements, such as only allotting three repeats of classes you failed or only five withdraws. Also, 30 of your last 39 hours must have been taken at RU.

Academic preparations are not the only things you need to check off your to-do list before graduation. Seniors should also purchase a RU black gown that you can purchase in the bookstore. Or you could ask to borrow someone’s gown that already graduated!

Seniors should also start thinking about letting their families know when graduation is so they can come to the ceremony in May. More family members there, means more graduations gifts.

Before leaving Radford University, you should also get recommendations from professors and staff who have known you throughout your academic career. Good recommendations can help you get hired when being compared to other contenders. Also, do not forget to go by the Career Services office in Walker Hall. They can help you become even more prepared for the working world.

Graduation is supposed to be a heart racing experience, with a mix of sad and happy emotions. Just make sure it is not stressful, you want to enjoy these last months in Radford, so make sure you get everything done in a timely manner!
